NEWARK, N.J. - Today the USL announced that Ironbound SC will be the latest club to join USL League Two. The club will compete in the Metropolitan Division.

"We are extremely excited to be joining USL League Two. This is a great opportunity to expand our organization's relationship with USL that dates back to 1993,” Albert Coutinho, Ironbound SC Chairman, said. “This opportunity will give our players, coaches and staff a chance to take their games to the next level."

The club’s mission is to provide underserved players from New Jersey and New York the opportunity to create a professional future, and to play the game at the highest level at the lowest cost.

“We’re so excited to welcome Ironbound SC to League Two,” Joel Nash, USL VP of Youth and Pre-Professional Properties. “The club has a well-documented history of helping soccer players get to the next level and have careers in this sport.”

The soccer club began in 1983, when Reverend Peter Uhde began a youth soccer program, named the Ironbound Strikers, to let kids in the community participate in a healthy, positive activity. In 1987, Coutinho joined the club and helped them become a nationally recognized program.

In 2006, Ironbound merged with the other large club in the area to form Ironbound SC. Since then, they have participated in USL Academy competitions, partnered with professional clubs as a youth development affiliate, and trained current Leeds United midfielder and Hudson Valley Hammers technical director Tyler Adams.
