The Ironbound Boys and Girls Club I Soccer League has been offered at 11 Providence Street since the early 80’s. It began as a program to teach children of the Ironbound not only the athletic skills of soccer, but also the social skills nurtured in a team environment. The soccer program’s success has been due to the dedication of volunteers, who donate skills and time as administrators, coaches, referees, scorekeepers, carpenters, masons, cooks, and candy sellers etc. to give the children a quality program. In the early 80’s, a group of volunteers combined their soccer and construction skills to transform the Ironbound Boys and Girls Club Gymnasium into an indoor soccer facility. The soccer facility has hosted many youth and adult tournaments over the last 25 years. In the last completed season, it was home to almost 700 children (between the ages of 4 to 17), divided into 70 teams, with all the games being played on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Urban Legend says that any player who grew up in the Newark area and that is currently playing, at one time or another played at the Ironbound Boys and Girls Club. A few professional players who have played in the Ironbound Boys and Girls Club League are current Seattle Sounder Michael Seamon, Johnny David (ex-MetroStars), and Peter Villegas (ex-Metrostars), in addition to many players who have played in college, and professional leagues abroad.
